The transition towards a greener economy necessitates integrating sustainability principles into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curricula. As industries adopt environmentally friendly practices, TVET institutions must equip learners with the competencies to support and drive sustainable initiatives. This regional training program aims to build the capacity of TVET curriculum developers and educators to embed green skills and sustainability concepts within TVET curricula.
Through this 8-day training, participants will develop a clear understanding of sustainability principles and their relevance to TVET; identify key green skills and competencies required in various TVET sectors; explore best practices and strategies for integrating green skills into TVET curricula; design curriculum frameworks incorporating sustainability and green practices; and develop action plans for mainstreaming green education within their institutions.
By fostering a culture of sustainability, this programme contributes to the global movement towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 13 (Climate Action). It empowers educators with the necessary tools and strategies to align TVET with emerging green workforce demands, ensuring that future professionals are equipped to contribute to sustainable development.
Specifically, by the end of the 8-day training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the importance of sustainability and green skills in TVET;
- Analyse existing green practices in their respective countries and institutions;
- Apply curriculum development strategies to integrate sustainability concepts into TVET programmes;
- Utilise innovative teaching and learning approaches to deliver green education effectively; and
- Formulate strategic action plans for institutionalising green practices in TVET.
Module 1: Introduction to Sustainability in TVET
This module provides an overview of sustainability in global and regional contexts, emphasising the role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in promoting sustainable development. Participants will explore key policies and frameworks that support green TVET, gaining insights into the integration of sustainability principles within educational institutions and workforce development strategies.
Module 2: Green Skills and Competencies for TVET
Participants will identify key green skills required across different sectors and analyse the case studies of successful green skills integration in TVET programs. Discussions will focus on the challenges and opportunities in embedding sustainability within TVET, helping educators and curriculum developers recognise practical approaches for addressing these challenges in their own contexts.
Module 3: Strategies for Integrating Green Practices into TVET Curricula
This module explores curriculum development approaches for embedding green skills into TVET programs. Participants will engage with innovative teaching and learning methods that foster sustainability education. A hands-on curriculum development workshop will provide a platform for participants to design sustainability-infused curriculum modules, ensuring practical application of the concepts covered.
Module 4: Country Presentations on Green TVET Practices
Participants will showcase country reports on Green TVET practices through 5-8 slide presentations, sharing insights into their national strategies and institutional initiatives. The session will include peer reviews and discussions to highlight best practices, facilitate knowledge exchange, and encourage participant collaboration.
Module 5: Case Studies and Practical Applications
An in-depth exploration of exemplary institution case studies will provide participants with real-world insights into effective green TVET implementation. This will be followed by a hands-on curriculum development workshop, where participants apply lessons from the case studies to develop actionable curriculum components aligned with sustainability goals.
Module 6: Industry Engagement and Educational Visit
Participants will visit a local institution or industry-recognised for its strong sustainability practices, offering first-hand exposure to real-world applications of green skills in the workforce. The visit will be followed by a reflection and discussion session, allowing participants to analyze key takeaways and consider how these best practices can be adapted to their institutions.
Module 7: Developing Institutional Action Plans
This module provides guidelines for designing institutional action plans, equipping participants with tools and strategies for integrating Green TVET in their respective institutions. Group work will focus on formulating actionable strategies, with opportunities for peer feedback and expert consultations to refine their plans for effective implementation.
Module 8: Presentation of Action Plans and Closing
Participants will present their institutional action plans in the final module, showcasing their strategies for integrating sustainability into TVET curricula. The training will conclude with a consolidation of key takeaways, reinforcing the importance of sustainability in TVET and ensuring that participants leave with concrete steps for implementation.
The course will run for 3 days online and 6 days onsite. It is scheduled from 6-8 Oct 2025 (Online) & 13-17 Oct 2025 (Onsite – Malaysia)
